Make a difference during times of need! Disasters are unpredictable, which is exactly why it’s critical to have a trained and ready volunteer workforce to provide relief at a moment’s notice. You can help by getting trained now to provide in-person support in a Red Cross shelter before, during, and/or after a disaster event. Shelter Service Associates support the day-to-day activities within a shelter by completing tasks necessary for operations while interacting with clients to ensure their needs are met. Responsibilities vary depending on assignment, but may include:

 

Reception: Welcoming, registering, and supporting shelter clients.Dormitory: Managing sleeping arrangements.Feeding: Helping with meal distribution.Information: Providing updates and assistance.Supply: Handling and organizing supplies.

 

Requirements:

Be comfortable working with diverse populations under stressful conditions.Hold a valid driver’s license (required for divisional and national deployments).

 

Time Commitment: Flexible to work shifts before, during, and after disaster events. The hours are long and may include consecutive 8-12 hours shifts. A minimum 14-day commitment is required if deploying to support large-scale national disaster events.

Every day, the American Red Cross responds to local disasters including home fires, floods, and wildfires. That’s why we're looking for compassionate and committed individuals to join our Disaster Action Team and extend a helping hand to neighbors during their most challenging moments.

 

As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you will help ensure our community members have access to safe shelter, food, clothing, and other basic needs following a disaster (such as a home fire). Once you've completed your initial training, your shifts will be on-call, allowing you to respond promptly to local emergencies, connect individuals with recovery resources, and provide empathetic care to those affected. We need dedicated healthcare volunteers year-round to support Red Cross teams responding to local disasters, such as home fires, floods, and wildfires, as well as during larger-scale emergencies. The Red Cross provides about 40% of our nation's blood and blood components, thanks to the generosity of donors. You can make a significant impact on this life-saving mission by offering a warm welcome as a volunteer Donor Ambassador at our local blood drives! Blood Donor Ambassadors help donors with check-in, answer their questions, and assist them at the refreshment table. As a licensed mental health professional, you can provide compassionate support to individuals and families as they navigate the aftermath of a disaster.

Disaster Mental Health volunteers play a crucial role in alleviating disaster-related stress and trauma by providing essential mental health support, including:   

Emotional Support: Address immediate emotional needs and offer compassionate support to disaster-impacted individuals.Coping and Resilience: Educate clients on coping strategies and resilience-building techniques.Resource Connection: Facilitate access to local mental health resources and services.Community Outreach: Collaborate with local mental health agencies to strengthen community resilience.Education and Training: Provide ongoing education and support to disaster responders and the community on emotional responses to disasters.

As a Lives Saved Lead, you'll play a critical role in recognizing the impact of our preparedness efforts by verifying cases where smoke alarms or preparedness education helped clients escape a home fire. Documenting these stories helps raise awareness, gain support, and ultimately save more lives.

Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the National Community Preparedness & Resilience Services team to identify and cross-reference cases of documented home fires with addresses where the Red Cross previously installed smoke alarms or provided preparedness education. Verify details of each case to confirm if Red Cross interventions helped individuals escape safely.Accurately document cases of lives saved for potential recognition by our Communications team.

 

Location & Time Commitment:
This role is flexible and can be performed remotely. Time commitment is approximately 5-10 hours per month, with the potential for additional hours depending on case volume.

Volunteer Transportation Specialists deliver blood donations from collection locations to the processing center and out to hospitals where it can be used to save lives. As a Transportation Specialist, you are a vital part of saving millions of lives each year by simply driving blood products where they need to go in our region.

Requirements: Position requires a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to lift approximately 45 pounds.

Time Commitment: Routes typically run from Bozeman to Helena on Tuesday through Saturday mornings from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM. We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one shift per month. As a volunteer, you will have the ability to sign up for the available days, times, and routes that work best for your needs.

Volunteer as a Duty Officer and make a vital impact in local disaster response. As a Duty Officer, you'll be the first point of contact for individuals in our region seeking assistance by answering initial calls and dispatching local Red Cross volunteers to support families affected by home fires and other disasters. Your efforts will ensure that those in need receive essential temporary relief, including safe shelter, food, and clothing. No prior experience is necessary—comprehensive training will be provided.

Location: 100% Virtual - you can help during times of disaster from the comfort of your own home!

Time Commitment:

The Duty Officer position is broken up into 6-hour shifts where you would be on-call to answer the phone and would need access to a computer.  Ideally, we ask that volunteers be willing to take one shift per week for at least a six month commitment. Shift Hours: 12am-6am, 6am-12pm, 12pm-6pm, 6pm-12am. As a volunteer, you would have the ability to sign-up for the days and times that work best for you.
