Needs From: Greater Gallatin United Way

Manhattan Senior Center is selling baked potatoes with all the fixin's at Manhattan Potato Fest right after the parade. This is a fundraiser for the Senior Center so all proceeds will go to support meal programs and social opportunities for older people in our community. The Manhattan Senior Center is the designated baked potato seller for the Potato Fest, so don't miss out!

We are in need of volunteers to help us sell and serve baked potatoes during the Fest and to help us clean up after. 

Help seniors improve their physical health and contribute to their social and emotional well-being by leading a walking group.  Meet seniors at a designated location and begin walking along the quiet streets of Manhattan or along a designated walk/bike path.  A fifteen and thirty minute route can be mapped out to fit the need of individuals.  

Help seniors to continue to live at their home by completing a home or yard project.  A small group could paint interior or exterior of the home, clean up landscaping and mow the yard, or other specified project.  The needed number of volunteers needed would depend on the project.  Needed materials and equipment may need to be donated by the volunteer group.   

Gardening in pots on a porch or in a yard plot is a great activity for seniors!  Come hold a one-time or occasional class on how to plant and care for garden plants.  This would be held at the Manhattan Senior Center and materials may be provided by the Center for the participants.  

Help the physical and social well-being of seniors!  Lead seniors in light stretching and physical activity.  This could be a "chair" activity or a more extensive activity in an open area.  Help encourage seniors and provide information so seniors can continue these exercises at home.  This will benefit the seniors physical and social well-being as they are able to participate and engage in more social and community activities.  Helping seniors focus on their physical well-being can help alleviate certain medical issues they may have.  The classes will be held at the Manhattan Senior Center.

Help seniors navigate the ever changing media of social platforms and how to utilize a smart phone and personal computer.  This will help seniors connect with family members, friends, their community and find beneficial resources.  Another aspect of help would be to advise them on avoiding digital scams. This can be a one-time workshop or a recurring one to occasionally readdress this need and answer any questions. 

Help benefit the social, emotional, and cognitive well-being of seniors!  Come lead a small group of seniors in a fun and engaging activity that you are experienced in.  This could include a fun group game, an art activity such as water coloring, or come perform music for the seniors to enjoy.  

Provide a critical overview and resources for seniors regarding their later in life care and end of life concerns.  Conduct one or a recurring workshop for seniors for estate planning.  Possibly covering managing personal living wills and advance directives, wills, trusts, inheritance taxes for beneficiaries, avoiding probate, etc.  

Ideally, this volunteer will arrive at the Senior Center at 9:30am and finish volunteering by 1:00pm.  This volunteer will be helping with Meals-On-Wheels preparation and packing, as well as, preparation, serving, and cleaning after the on site congregate meal.  This position can be shortened from 9:30am to 11:00am to accommodate a volunteer's schedule.

This volunteer will arrive at the Senior Center AT 10:45 to pick up the meals that are packed to go and the Driver's sheet for the day.   The time it take to deliver the meals depends on the number of seniors receiving meals, but it should take between and hour to an hour and 1/2.  Delivery cartons are returned to the Senior Center.
