Who We Are

Mission: To guide collaborative watershed stewardship in the Gallatin Valley for a healthy and productive landscape.

Established in 2004, Gallatin Watershed Council began as an informal group of agency professionals, Montana State University professors and scientists, environmental consultants, landowners, and agricultural producers. From its outset, GWC has served as a forum for communication and coordination of activities in the watershed. Today, our work in the watershed community is based on consensus-building and finding common ground around natural resource concerns.

Volunteers play a crucial role in helping the Gallatin Watershed Council to achieve its mission. Every year, hundreds of community members generously donate their time stewarding the Lower Gallatin Watershed. Volunteer season is April-October and includes one-time and season-long opportunities. Whatever your talents or interests, whether you have a little or a lot of time to spare, we welcome you to join us in our rivers and streams, along our trails, and in the mud!

What We Do

The Gallatin Watershed Council conducts on-the-ground restoration and enhancement projects to improve watershed health in the Lower Gallatin Watershed, conducts collaborative watershed planning to help inform future planning of our water resources, hosts educational tours and volunteer events to encourage community members to become stewards of our watershed and engages in local policy to give water a voice at the table.
